A baby duck is foraging alone between water plants, going further and further along the lakeshore. Still so small at the end of summer, he is definitely a very late comer. You are worried that he got strayed and lost his family. But maybe he is having a great adventure and a good time on his own - he doesn't look anxious at all! The turtle, who was trying hard to climb up the dam when you saw him last time, but had to give up at the end, is trying again from the water below the dam. You don't know if he will ever realize the challenge he is taking on: a 34 feet long ascending slope at forty five degrees! And the little muskrat is up to playing again. He continues the game with you: from time to time, he submerges into water only to emerge from water at another spot, and when you find him, he holds still for a while, and then goes under again. But you are totally at a loss this time: in a large nonlinear jungle of weeds covered by water lilies, you have no idea how to predict where he will show up - you don't even know which direction to look ahead! Unusually, perhaps a bit odd, you have run into too many fish on the water edge, one, two, three, another, and still another... While your mind is working out some superstitious thought, your eyes notice the water marks on the rocks: the lake is much shallower today! You look at the fish again: they are all at ease, just going about their everyday life. Does seeing fish make catching a fish easier? You wonder. Maybe next time you should ask the guy who is fishing there. |
