"The
rain last night did wonders: Most of the frost is out of the ground,
so the moisture is soaking in and the mud is disappearing." In the Arb, a bit of green starts to show here and there, and birds
burst into the scene from nowhere or everywhere. Each year, the mating
songs of those red-winged black birds strike a painful chord in the early
spring. Does life have to be always associated with pain? And yet doesn't
life begin with the painful process of maternal delivery or thrusting open
a shell or ground? Isn't life growing from the painful experience of
breaking its old form and hence overcoming itself? Hasn't life become
richer and larger through painful circumstances? The goal of life is to grow,
and for life to grow to its fullness, pain is not only necessary but also a
source. Thus joy and pain are eternally united in life - the ultimate joy
of life comes from growing while pain promotes its growing.
