(The photo is from the New York Times on August 23,
2009) A second of flight defying gravity. A day dancing with waves. Even flirting under an older brother's watchful eye. Cold beer. Bare feet. Happy smiles. Shiite and Sunni. The Iraqis are living, at least for a moment. A mirage in the desert, indeed. It reminds you what your favorite Chinese writer, Ailing Zhang, once wrote in an essay: The small farmers market is covered by discarded vegetable leaves after sunset. A boy skids swiftly through the market on a bike, both hands off handlebars, arms up in the air. Maybe the loveliness of life is all in that moment of ''hands off?!'' |
